Kimberly Bowen Colorado Art
Born in southern California, majoring in Interior Design, Kimberly Bowen's biggest passion was riding her horses, then drawing and painting them. In 1994, she, her husband and 1 year old son moved to Colorado. Largely a self-taught artist, she was inspired by Colorful Colorado and its wildlife. She had always used conventional mediums for drawing and painting horses, then in 1997 she started painting on a very different type of medium. Blame it on a piece of Arizona flagstone. A small piece, no larger than a piece of paper, it had some grooves, cracks and a warm color to it. It seemed to have an image inside of it, waiting to be brought out. Years later, Bowen is still enjoying this unique mixed media. Exploring many different subjects beyond her beloved western horse, she now paints wildlife, canines, landscapes and western- themed portraitures on Arizona flagstone. The small, watercolor paintings on small stones have given way to acrylic renditions on large stones measuring up to three by four feet and weighing in at…well, just ask her husband.
With a strong connection to nature and animals, Bowen is picky about the stones she selects, studying each piece as if to look inside and see what it may offer. Although she will often shape the chosen pieces to a proper size, the color and the natural texture must lend itself to a particular subject. With meticulous attention to detail, she incorporates the stone’ s texture to bring her paintings to life. The joy, she says, “…is that the final painting invites you to actually touch it, run your hand over it, as if you could chip the bark right off the tree or lift the feathers of a bird.” Her paintings also beckon people to just sit and stare. With a number of display options, including custom wrought iron wall hangers, table or floor stands, the paintings are easy to appreciate.
Her work has been included in magazines, newspapers and was featured as the cover art for a recently published book. She’s won several small awards and is currently displayed in many homes, lodges, offices, galleries, source books and retail stores. She participates in several different juried and solo exhibits in the western United States and is commissioned for paintings throughout the year. Some of her favorite shows are the prestigious Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Copper Country fine art pavilion in Copper Mountain, Colorado. She is a member of Artisans of Colorado and has also donated her work for several different causes and wildlife reserves. Kimberly would like to extend an invitation for you to meet her and enjoy your favorite pieces at either a private showing or keep in touch for an update of her upcoming events she’ll be attending this year.
