Harriet Peck Taylor - In Her Own Words: I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. My mom was an artist and watching her paint was magical. My dad loved nature and so we spent time in the summers hiking, camping, and fishing. Animals have been a guiding force throughout my life. Our pets gave me my first lessons in love and loyalty, companionship and responsibility.

I have observed many North American mammals over the years but it is always a thrill. Watching them in their natural environment makes one reflect on the importance of wilderness. Whenever I'm in the woods or on a mountaintop, I feel more alive and my senses become attuned to the nuances of that particular place and moment: the meadowlark's song on a sky blue day, bear claw marks on an aspen, or a coyote's lonely howl on a moonlit night. Worries seem to vanish. All these things move me and are the driving force behind my art and stories. I often hike in the mountains near our Colorado home and have discovered favorite places where the bears like to eat in autumn and secret trails that mountain lion use. I keep a detailed journal of sketches and observations about animal and bird habits, behaviors, and appearances. My art is not a naturalist's realism, but rather nature distilled through my imagination. I've watched animals at play: bears sliding down a snowfield, bison kicking up their heels after a spring storm and coyotes playing tag, and so, much of my art and stories portray the lighter side of animal behavior. Animals can teach us about the natural world and our place in it.

Much of my work is done in a hand painted batik process. Translucent layers of color are painted and wax is applied after each layer of color to preserve that area. The wax gives clarity to my lines and textures. The dyes give the fluidity of color which lends my art its distinctive look. Recently, I have been working in oil pastels. This medium allows me the freedom to work outside. With oil pastels, I can combine elements of drawing and painting in the same work. I work on a board or paper and start by painting a dark under layer. This helps add a richer color base to my palette. I enjoy the pastels as I can apply the textures and lines in an expressionistic manner which seems to capture something of the energy of an animal as well as the ever changing light and shadows. A critic once said that my work pays tribute to a beautiful world. I hope that through my art and books, I can share my own personal vision and that it can draw you into the wonders of wild places.
